How to Find Joy by Reading God's Word

Let me tell y’all something, sometimes (if not most times) I find it really difficult to be joyful about my time with the Lord. I try not to treat my quiet times as if they are just another item to mark off on the day’s to-do list, but sometimes that’s just how it feels.

So here is where this all comes from. This past summer, a friend of mine emphasized the importance of joy through reading the Word. This was new to me – never had I even considered being happy about spending time with the Lord. I knew that Him and the fact that He was going to return one day was supposed to make me joyful (and I’ll admit, sometimes I don’t even feel joy about that).

And I don’t think I’m alone in this, either. So many of us are caught up in the routines of our daily lives which tend to let us down and so we forget that we can have joy because we can walk with the Lord in each moment throughout each day.

In 1 Peter 1, Peter talks about the joy that the people in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia had even though they were exiles.

Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
— 1 Peter 1:8-9

These people were filled with joy because they believed in the Lord. And if they had inexpressible and glorious joy just from believing in Him, oh how much more joy we can receive by spending time with Him!

So how do we find joy by reading God’s word?

By praying!

That sounds a bit cliché, but it’s so true! There are multiple instances in the Bible where we are encouraged to pray to ask God for the things He desires us to have.

If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
— John 15:7
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us
— 1 John 5:14
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
— Mark 11:24

God desires us to be joyful because of Him (yes, even in the most difficult of times!) and we cannot be joyful because of Him without His help.

Honestly I would have not thought to pray for joy if it weren’t for my friend, and now I realize how difficult it is to be joyful for such a simple activity.

So here is my final encouragement for everyone - ask the Lord to help you be joyful when you read His Word! This can help make your quiet times feel a lot less like a chore and more like a blessing.
